(8) Tim has reduced pre-operation inspection time by 85%. The self-checking
system consists of central units in driving trailers and terminal units in each car. Each
32-bit central processing unit (CPU) is connected via a bus. The network has a capacity
of 2.4 Mbps.
(9) Each motor car has four 95 kW asynchronous traction motors. Two motor
cars are coupled electrically. One motor car (M) has a pantograph and two sets of
inverter each driving four traction motors. Another one (M’) has an air compressor and
a static inverter for auxiliary power supply

. It supplies 210 kVA, three-phase a.c., and
440V, 60Hz.
(10) An electrical air brake system with regenerative braking provides normal
and emergency braking, and is to cope with melting snow and ice on the line in winter.
Braking is controlled via Tim, and a brake control unit which allows mixed electrical
and mechanical braking. A parking brake has also been introduced to replace the hand
brake on the leading car.
(11) The series E231 utilizes the same bogies as the series 209 family. However,
the structure of the motor bogie has been slightly modified to adapt to robot welding.
Its wheelbase is 2.1m, wheel diameter is 860mm when new, and the two self-ventilated
motors are installed on the bogie frame. The motor bogies have tread brakes, while
trailer bogies combine tread and disk brakes.
(12) The series E231 represents a revolution in design, maintenance and
operation through the introduction of improved computer information system
technology. For example, Tim has enabled JR East to change its maintenance program
from a periodically-planned one to a condition monitoring one.
(13) As a result, the construction cost of the series E231 has been reduced by
about 12% compared with the series 209. And the series E231 trains will reduce energy
consumption by half. The development of the series E231 shows that a strategic design
to reduce costs and energy can bring success in railway business.
Notes: 1) a block – колодка; 2) honeycomb - сотовое покрытие; 3) auxiliary
power supply – покрытие собственных нужд электростанции.
