ORE COMMUTER TRAINS ORDERED
British Rail invested ₤21 million to ease overcrowding in a number of inner
suburban commuter routes.
Similar in design to the existing fleet of four-car Class 455 units, the new units
will give suburban routes greater flexibility in matching capacity to changing peak and
off-peak demands.
During peak hours, a Class 456 will be also able to run in multiple with a Class
455 to strengthen overcrowded four-car trains. Off-peak, when traffic is light, a two-car
Class 456 will offer significant savings compared with a Class 455.
Introduction of the Class 456 will also enable 22 four-car Class 455 units to be
transferred to other suburban services, replacing some of the oldest commuter stock and
improving the quality of service.
One very important thing about the Class 456 is that it does not differ greatly
from the existing Class 455, as far as their designs are concerned. This will simplify the
provision of maintenance, using existing facilities.
