OCOMOTIVE MAINTENANCE CONTRACT FOR BREL
BREL (British Rail Electric Locomotives) has won contract to overhaul over
100 locomotives at its Crew works. Under a 6 million pounds contract, 90 British Rail
Class 08 shunting locomotives will receive overhauls during the next three years. The
Class 08 is a British Rail’s standard shunting locomotive and over 70 of these locs are
in service nowadays.
London Underground has signed a 300,000 pounds contract with BREL covering
the maintenance of a fleet of 27 battery electric locomotives. These units are used to
haul works trains in the Underground when the traction current supply is switched off
during track maintenance work..

DB
RATIONALIZES WORKSHOPS
German Rail (DB) has decided to rationalize its overhaul workshops by the end
of 2005. DB will sell or close down eight workshops and concentrate overhauls on the
remaining ten. The objective is to improve the train maintenance productivity by at
least 25 per cent. The eight workshops under threat employ 5000 people.
DB says its overhaul workshops are under-utilized with only 57 percent of the
capacity being used. DB’s investment of 3.75 million dollars in new trains up to 2007
will have a consequence: the maintenance concept will be radically different as the
trains will have maintenance-friendly technology. DB will also end up with a smaller
train fleet. DB says that if it does not rationalize its workshops, the utilization will fall
to 30 per cent by 2007 and just 20 per cent in some cases.
