EDUCING THE IMPACT OF FAILURES
In today’s commercial international market it is of vital importance to provide
timely and reliable services because every breakdown or failure has an adverse effect
on revenue. This is particularly important in the privatized Britain market: train
operators face significant financial penalties to the infrastructure owner, Railtrack, for
delays arising from faults or failures attributable to the operator.
Of course, it is best not to have failures at all, but there is also a need to reduce
the impact of failures when they do occur. First, there is a need to provide train crew
and operations staff with a clearly defined set of instructions so they can take
immediate action following a failure in traffic.
Consultant Interfleet Technology, Britain, has developed fault-finding manuals,
together with an interactive PC-based software system for use by the operations control
center.
It is essential to study the root cause of the failure. Operators need a system for
monitoring failures so that repeat defects can be quickly identified and addressed.
