Why did Michelangelo have a tremendous influence on his
contemporaries?
Michelangelo (1475-1564) was one of the most inspired
creators in the history of art. As a sculptor, an architect, a
painter, and a poet, he had a tremendous influence on all his
contemporaries.
He was born near Arezzo, but it was Florence that he con-
sidered to be his home town. What he loved above all was the
city’s art, architecture and culture.
Initially, he concentrated on sculpture. In 1501 he began to
carve a figure of David from a huge block of marble. This was
finished in 1504, when he was 29. David is shown with a sling
on his shoulder, looking into the distance.
Later, Michelangelo was asked by Pope Julius II to paint the
ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. Every day for four years, from
1508 till 1512, he worked on this task, lying on his back at the
top of high scaffolding, his neck stiff, with paint trickling onto
his face.
He designed many buildings, but it was his work at St Pe-
ter’s Basilica that represented his greatest achievement as an
architect. His dome became the model for domes all over the
Western world. What is difficult to appreciate nowadays is its
revolutionary design.
There’s a small group of artists such as Shakespeare and
Beethoven, who, through their work, have been able to express
the deepest experiences of humanity. Michelangelo belongs to
this group.
