Российский закон о государственном регулировании генно-инженерной
деятельности был принят в 1996 году. Сегодняшние решения - это лишь
дополнения к действующему закону. Несмотря на то, что, как считает
Лесков, в мире пока не зафиксировано ни одного случая причинения вреда от
модифицированных растений или продуктов, Россия, как и другие
государства, продолжает возводить дополнительные барьеры
безопасности.
Как утверждает ответственный секретарь межведомственной комиссии
по проблемам генно-инженерной деятельности Александр Голиков, отныне
государственные органы еще пристальнее будут изучать любой
модифицированный организм. Специально уполномоченные
государственные органы будет решать, какие организмы безопасны для
здоровья человека, а какие нет. После этой процедуры каждый
модифицированный продукт, разрешенный к производству, будет занесен
в
государственный реестр.

1. How can genetically engineered plants help farmers? Why would the
technique be very useful in developing countries?
2. Genetically engineered food is already on sale in the shops, but no
experiments have yet been done to test its effects on humans. Do you think it
is a good idea to sell the food without these tests? Why? Why not?
3. In the film Jurassic Park scientists recreated animals that were extinct from a
small amount of DNA. Scientists have already cloned animals as sheep,
mule. They could clone endangered species, like tigers or gorillas. Would
this be a good idea? Why?/ Why not?
4. Should scientists use gene therapy to correct abnormal genes in people with
life-threatening inherited illnesses like cystic fibrosis?
5. In the future, scientists ay be able to “correct” the genes that govern
behaviour, like aggression. Should governments ask the to do this? What are
the dangers?
6. Should we, as individuals, be able to change our genes if we don’t like the
way we are? Why? Why not?
7. How far should we let scientists go with genetic engineering? In what they
are acceptable socially and morally? Should there be any limits or
safeguards?
