   Exercise 1. Read the following words. Mind their pronunciation.

   1) collision –       столкновение, авария;
   2) accident –        ДТП;
   3) to enhance,
      to upgrade –       усиливать, укреплять;
   4) average     –      средний;
   5) injuries    –      повреждение;
   6) dividend –         дивиденд.

   Exercise 2. Read the following verbs. Mind their meaning. Pay attention to the
principal forms.

   1)   to know (knew, known)           –    знать;
   2)   to prove (proved, proven)       –    доказывать;
   3)   to occur ( -ed, -ed )           –    происходить, случаться;
   4)   to contribute to ( -ed, -ed )   –    способствовать чему либо, делать вклад;
   5)   to define ( -ed, -ed )           –    определять;
   6)   to allow ( -ed, -ed )            –   позволять, допускать;
   7)   to show (showed, shown)          –   показывать, демонстрировать;
   8)   to pay (paid, paid)              –    платить.

   Exercise 3. Read and translate the following groups of words

   2)   to drive – driving – front-wheel drive;
   3)   to occur – occuring – occurance;
   4)   to protect – protection – protector – collision protection;
   5)   to define – defining – definition;
   6)   to standard – standard – safety standard;
   7)   to injure – injuring – the injured – injuries.

   Exercise 4. Pay attention to the following abbreviated words. Read the words.

  HLDI – the Highway Loss Data Institute – Институт исследования информации
дорожных потерь.

   Exercise 5. Write down the principal forms of the following verbs. Translate them.

   To know, to become, to prevent, to occur, to contribute, to develop, to design, to
enhance, to produce, to pay.
