     Exercise 1. Read the following words. Mind their pronunciation.

     1) steering column      –   рулевая колонка;
     2) to collapse          –   прекращаться, останавливаться;
     3) collision            –   столкновение;
     4) joint                –   общий, совместный;
     5) to fit               –   соответствовать по размеру;
     6) bellows              –   сильфон, гофрированная мембрана;
     7) to crumple           –   мять, морщить;
     8) cage                 –   кожух, каркас;
     9) rugged               –   неровный,
     10) to reinforce        –   укреплять, придавать жёсткость.

   Exercise 2. Read the following verbs. Mind their meaning. Pay attention to the
principal forms.

     1)   to crumple ( -ed, -ed )     –    мять, морщить;
     2)   to fit ( -ed, -ed )         –    подходить по размеру;
     3)   to test ( -ed, -ed )        –    подвергать проверке;
     4)   to absorb ( -ed, -ed )      –    впитывать, поглощать;
     5)   to reinforce ( -ed, -ed )   –    усиливать;
     6)   to mould ( -ed, -ed )        –    формовать, отливать в форму.

     Exercise 3. Read and translate the following groups of words

     1)   to steer – steering – steering column;
     2)   to collide – colliding – collision;
     3)   to locate – locating – location;
     4)   to protect – protecting – protection;
     5)   to create – creating- creator – creation;
     6)   safe – safety;
     7)   to except – excepting – exception – exceptionally.

     Exercise 4. Pay attention to the following abbreviated words. Read the words.

     MPH – Mile Per Hour (миль в час);

     KM/H – Kilometre Per Hour.

     Exercise 5. Write down the principal forms of the following verbs. Translate them.
