Several methods have been used to analyze the effect of the post-core system on
the stress distribution in the dentine. Experimental and finite element methods are
commonly used.
Experimental methods have included:
1) tensile test,
2) shear loading test and,
3) photoelastic analysis.
In a nutshell, restorations involving endodontical posts have been investigated
clinically, experimentally and theoretically.
It is a clinical observation that endodontically treated teeth are more fragile
than teeth with vital pulp. A few clinical studies (Sorensen & Martinoff, 1984;
Lewis & Smith, 1988; Mentink, Meeuwissen & Ka¨ yser, 1993; Morgano &Milot,
1993) show that the main causes of failure have been identified as: post-distortion,
caries, loss of retention of the post, root fracture, loss of retention of the crown
and post-distortion. Although several factors are involved, some of these failures
are related to the mechanical properties of the posts. Asmussen, Peutzfeldt &
Heitmann (1999) measured the stiffness, the elastic limit, and the strength of a
selection of endodontic posts recently introduced in to the market. The posts under
investigation differed significantly with respect to their mechanical properties.
The dentin in endodontically treated molars was found to be weaker and more
