Когда эквивалент модального глагола (can) дублирует уже имеющиеся
формы (I can = I am able; He could = He was able), он имеет собственный
оттенок значения am / is / are / able to - быть в состоянии, быть способным,
were / were able to - смог, сумел, удалось (= manage).
