Comment on the tittle of the book. Does it reveal the main
idea of the novel? Name some of the problems the novel
touches upon.
Make use of the following commentary:
The expression ‘cakes and ale meaning ‘fun and joyful life’
was borrowed from Shakespeares play The Twelfth Night:
Dost thou think, because thou art virtuous, there shall be no
more cakes and ale? (Act 2, Sc.3)
The expression a skeleton in the closet (= a skeleton in the
cupboard; = a family skeleton) meaning a family secret, some-
thing ignominious which should be hidden, was introduced by
W. Thackeray: And it is from these that we shall arrive at
some particulars regarding the Newcome family, which will
show us that they have a skeleton or two in their closets, as
well as their neighbours.
(W. Thackeray, “The Newcomes”, ch. LV)
