spoke so much that the man had to run back to the doctor. “You ought to make my wife dumb
again”, he said. But the doctor answered that nobody could make the woman stop talking. The
man cried: “What must I do? I shall die* if I have to listen to her all day”. The doctor answered:
“I can’t make her dumb, but I am able to make you deaf* ”. The man was thinking the matter
over* for some minutes and said: “You may do so. It will be better, I think”.

SILK AND ITS USE
Like wool, silk is an animal fibre. But it is produced by insects. Almost the entire
commercial silk industry is based on one insect – the silkworm. It spins the silk and wraps the
fibre around itself in the form of a cocoon.
It is supposed that silk originated in China about 2500 B.C.* Then the silkworm was
probably introduced in India, and much later (about the sixth century A.D.*) the Romans
brought silk to Europe.
Silk combines a high strength and flexibility with good moisture absorption, softness and
