      A small but very popular robot was from the Massachusetts Institute of
Technology. This six-legged creature climbed easily over telephone books twice its
height. It took the gold in this category and won a 200-pound prize as the best
example commercial possibilities.
      The Robot Olympics officially started with lighting the Olympic flame. But
the opening ceremony was disrupted when the Scottish robot chosen to carry the
flame failed to get past the door6. We never actually expect it to make it", said its
designer, showing a certain lack of confidence in his own contestant. "It just doesn't
have the battery power".
        The judges said they made allowances for7 the problems of dealing with
advanced technology and gave points for elegance of idea" and innovation as well
ell as speed.
