FAMILY PLEURONECTIDAE
There are 44 generae in family Pleuronectidae. In the Russia – 17 generae with
28 species are found. The most important species are:
Halibut, the largest species of flatfish, one of the finest of food fishes. The female
sometimes weighs several hundred kilograms; the male rarely more than fifty. Body
oblong, not strongly compressed. Mouth wide, oblique. Dorsal origin above eye,
its middle rays longest, its posterior rays, like those of anal, bifid; caudal crescentic;
