SALMONIDAE
There are two important kinds of fish called salmon, the Atlantic salmon and the
Pacific salmon.
Atlantic salmon. In America its natural range reached to both sides of the North
Atlantic, extending on the American coast from Greenland to Cape Cod and the Hud-
son River. But as industrial development progressed

, one stream after another was so
obstructed by dams, and as no care was taken to protect spawning migration in the riv-
ers and streams in America this species is now almost a historic fish in the waters of
the United States. In Canada maintaining the salmon population has been helped great-
ly by providing fishways

at dams and by limiting netting at river mouths.
In the Russia the salmon is valuable commercial fish of the basins of the Barentz,
Whaite and Baltic Seas where it goes under names "losos" and "semga".
The highly carnivorous Atlantic salmon run far up the rivers to spawn. They spend
more time in fresh water than other species, sometimes remaining in fresh water until
from three to six years old. Its habits in this respect differ according to a locality. Most
Atlantic salmon are about six inches long when they enter salt water. When they enter
tide water, they put off their youthful barred and spotted pattern

and take on the sil-
very coat worn during their sojourn in the sea. It has been determined that those sal-
mon that return to the rivers to spawn after passing only two years in the sea. Will al-
ways remain small, whereas those that begin spawning after spending more years in salt
water reach a large size. Salmon attain the length of 150 cm and the weight of 39 kg.
Adult Atlantic salmon, like the Pacific salmon, lose their bright colour and their
trim shape, and the males develop hooked jaws upon entering fresh water. Unlike the
Pacific salmon they do not die after spawning.
The salmon is highly carnivorous feeding altogether on live animals. It includes in
its favourites are herring and capelin. White in fresh water adult salmon feed little and
near spawning time not at all.
