микротекст из письма английского корреспондента, наше
го современника:
«Moscow was a disaster. I arrived on December 14. It was
minus God knows what, and immigration had lost my visa.
Myself and cameraman were forced to sleep in the airport
terminal (no heating) for two nights before we could get out.
One night we went to a casino. The cheating was so
obvious. As the ball fell, the croupier would cough and
several men would lean over and put their chips on the
winning number, and hence he paid a small fortune.
I observed this for half an hour, and then asked to see the
manager, who turned out to be from Manchester.
So I sat next to him in the bar and without looking
obvious, told him what was going on. One man, who had been
involved in the scam, started to walk towards us and the
manager nearly bursts into tears and whispers “Whatever
you do shut up and say you are an old school friend of mine”.
So I did.
This gentleman, in Armani cords and a YSL jacket eyes
me up, asks a few questions and puts his arm around me in a
“friendly” way. It is then that I see the pistol in his belt. I am
sweating.
I explained that I was an old friend, working in Moscow
for a London TV network. He seemingly believes this and
walks away speaking into a mobile.
The manager then whispers: “He is the head of the
Chetchen mafia in Moscow. I would make an excuse and
leave, go to your hotel, and stay there. He is wondering what
are you talking to me about”.
