Интересно отметить, что эксплицитно вдохновение не
названо в тексте главы ни разу. В ней нет фраз типа «I was
inspired», «I felt inspiration», однако подробное метафори
ческое в высшей степени психологически точное описание
этого состояния не дает читателю возможности ошибиться
в интерпретации того, что В. Набоков называет «numb
fury».
В конце главы представлена эмотивная ситуация, в ко
торой субъектом состояния является особо эмотивно важ
ный внутритекстовый адресат – мать В. Набокова:
«Presently I finished reading and looked up at her. She was
smiling ecstatically through the tears that streamed down
her face. “How wonderful, how beautiful”, she said, and
with the tenderness in her smile still growing, she passed me
a hand mirror so that I might see the smear of blood on my
cheekbone where at some indeterminable time I had crushed
a gorged moquito by the unconscious act of propping my
