From Popov's first Radio Receiver to cosmic radio communication and
computer
May 7
th
is celebrated in our country as Radio day, because Popov gave a
working demonstration of the first radio receiver, in the world on that day. Now
radio-engineering, electronics and television are finding increasing application in
the economy, transport and medicine. The automation of industrial processes, of
heat and power stations, remote control and management, the development of
electronic computers and cybernetic systems - all this is possible because of the
achievements of electronics. Computers were first introduced in the 1940's and
50's. They were large in size and not very convenient for use. Presently they are
smaller in size and have more resources than previous one's. Now they are used not
only at factories, plants, offices, but at the personal use too. The first operating
system was DOS (disc operating system). Now Windows is mostly used. Windows
comes supplied with a few of its own handy programs. There's а
word-processing
program called Write, a drawing program - Paintbrush, a communication
program called Terminal for connecting to outside information services over
phone lines, small utility programs that are helpful for keeping track of
appointments and notes, a couple of games to help you escape from your work
and a few others.
The main parts of the system
There are many hard and software pieces in a computer system. The large
metal box is called the case. The case and its contents (power supply, system
board, etc.) is called the system unit. You communicate with your computer with
the keyboard, mouse and monitor. With the help of them, you type information to
be processed and stored.
The keyboard
Many of the keys on the keyboard are letter keys, punctuation keys, shift
keys, tab, and the spacebar. Your keyboard also has many specialized keys.
The mouse
The mouse works by sliding it around on a flat surface. The mouse does
not work if you hold it in the air. As you glide the mouse you will see the arrow
on your screen. The arrow is called a pointer.
