4. Talking with Salespeople
Below are situations in which you might find yourself in the United States. Read each
situation, decide what is appropriate, and choose the answer that best fits the
circumstance. If there is more than one correct answer, choose all that apply.
1. You are in a department store because you wish to look but have no intention of
buying anything. A salesperson comes up to you and asks, “Can I help you?”
What should you do?
a. Say no.
b. Say yes and ask for help so you won’t offend the salesperson
c. Say, “Thanks, but I’m just browsing.”
2. When reading a newspaper or magazine, you notice something called a
manufacturer’s coupon; it offers to give you 10 to 15 cents off the price of a
grocery-store product. Since you wish to save money, what should you do?
a. Take the whole newspaper to the store and give it to the clerk when you pay
for your groceries.
b. When you are paying for your groceries, tell the clerk that you saw the coupon
