VII. Using the Telephone
An American visiting another English-speaking country was expecting few
differences when using the telephone. From the airport, she called her friend to pick
her up. Although she carefully inserted the correct coins, all she could hear was th
person at the other end of the line saying, “Hello, hello, hello!” She tried to explain
where she was and what she wanted, but the other person couldn’t hear her. Finally,
her friend realized what was happening and told her, “If you want to talk, you have to
push the button on the phone!”
In this chapter, we’ll discuss how to use the telephone for business and social
occasions in America.
