As a convenience to the consumer, many businesses and agencies provide a
special number so that their customers may call them long distance free of charge.
This is called an 800 number. To use an 800 number, dial 1-800 and then the
seven-digit phone number of the company. If you don’t know if the company you
want to reach long distance has an 800 number, dial 0, and ask the operator for the
800-number operator. This operator can give you the 800 number for any
company, hotel, or agency which has one in the United States.
Here an example of an advertisement that includes an 800 number. What is the
company selling? Why do you think they provide a free long-distance number?
