Ex. XXVI. Translate into English using the subjunctive mood.
1. "Желательно, чтобы вы повторили (revise) все слова перед контрольной работой", – сказал преподава-
тель. 2. Он настаивал на том, чтобы ему передали всю дополнительную информацию. 3. Я требую, чтобы он
ушел. 4. Комиссия предложила включить его в список. 5. Мы предлагаем им сделать перерыв. 6. Детям необхо-
димо спать на открытом воздухе. 7. Вы должны наконец настоять, чтобы он возвращался домой вовремя. 8. Ко-

СТРУКТУРЫ
WOULD RATHER, HAD BETTER
Структуры would sooner и would rather не имеют большой разницы, но would rather употребляется чаще.
За этими структурами следует инфинитив без частицы to.
Структура would rather/sooner + infinitive может быть использована вместо prefer + gerund для описания
действия в настоящем времени. Например, Tom prefers reading to talking.
Примечание: за глаголом prefer может следовать существительное, но за структурой would rather всегда
следует глагол. Например, He prefers wine to beer. He would rather drink wine than beer. I prefer tennis to golf. I’d
rather play tennis than golf.
Смысл предложения может не совпадать при использовании глагола prefer и структуры would rather в та-
ких случаях, как He prefers dogs to cats и He would rather have dogs than cats.
Структура would rather не может употребляться в прошедшем времени.
Сравните:
Tom would rather read than talk.
Tom preferred reading to talking/liked better tan talking.
За конструкциями would rather/sooner и would prefer может следовать перфектный инфинитив. Например,
We went by sea but I’d rather have gone by air/I’d prefer to have gone by air. (I want to go by air, but didn’t get my
wish).
