За конструкциями would rather/sooner может следовать предложение в прошедшем времени. Например,
Shall I give you a cheque? – I’d rather you paid cash.
Возможна следующая конструкция Would rather + subject + didn’t для отрицательной формы. Например,
Would you like him to paint it? – No, I’d rather he didn’t (paint it).
Ann wants to tell Tom, but I’d rather she didn’t (tell him).
Однако, в предложениях с глаголами prefer и like возможны конструкции object + infinitive. Например, I’d
prefer you to pay cash. I’d prefer him not to paint it. I’d prefer her not to tell Tom.
Конструкция had better показывает нереальные события. Значение относится к настоящему или будущему
времени. Например, I had better ring him at once.
Отрицательная форма образуется с частицей not, которая ставится после better. Например, You had better
not miss the last bus.
Конструкция had better обычно не употребляется в вопросительной форме, но иногда используется, чтобы
показать отрицательно-вопросительную форму в виде совета. Например,

Hadn’t you better ask him
first?
= Wouldn’t it be a good thing to
ask him first?
Конструкция you had better наиболее употребительная форма. Например, You had better fly (It would be best
for you to fly, or I advise you to fly).
В прямой речи конструкция had better не изменяется. Например, He said "I’d better hurry"/He said "Ann had
better hurry". В непрямой речи конструкция had better заменяется словом advise. Например, He advised me to
hurry

1. Вы бы лучше держались подальше от этого человека. 2. Ты бы лучше предложил что-нибудь еще. 3. Вы
бы лучше убедили Джорджа остаться дома. 4. Она бы лучше не обращала на это их внимания. 5. Вы бы лучше
не позволяли им вмешиваться в свои дела. 6. Вы бы лучше обратили их внимание на этот факт. 7. Ей бы лучше
помолчать. 8. Лучше бы вам сразу сказать ей, что новости печальные.
Ex. III. Replace the sentences with a statement expressing preference using "would rather".
1. I want to go to the movies, but I have to study. 2. I’d like to go to Washington, but I have to work. 3. She wants to eat
in a restaurant, but she doesn’t have any money. 4. He wants to rent a compact car, but they only have luxury cars. 5.
They want to rent the two-bedroom apartment, but it’s too expensive. 6. I want to sleep, but I have to work. 7. I wish I
could have dessert, but I’m on a diet. 8. He’d like to go to lunch, but he has a meeting. 9. I wish I could talk to you, but
I have an appointment. 10. She wants to stay at the hotel, but they don’t have a room. 11. They want to take a limo, but
they don’t have enough money. 12. I wish I could go to Georgia, but I have to visit my aunt in Tennessee. 13. He’d like
to have dinner, but he doesn’t have enough time.
Ex. IV. Answer these questions using I’d prefer or I’d rather. Use the words in brackets for your answers.
Mode l: Shall we walk? (prefer/go by car) – I’d prefer to go by car.
1. Shall we play tennis? (prefer/go for a swim).
2. Shall we watch television? (rather/read a book).
3. Shall we leave now? (rather/ wait for a few minutes)
4. Shall we go to a restaurant? (prefer/ eat at home)
5. Shall we decide now? (rather/think about it for a while)
Ex. V. Use "I’d rather you". You say you’ll do something but really you want your friend to do it.
