The Spinlab 900 HVI System :
Performance, Accuracy, Efficiency
The 900 System is the high volume instruments ( HVI ) that measure length, length
uniformity, strength, elogation, fineness, color and trash content.
For purchasing raw fiber, research, bale selection for yarn production, optimum
adjustment of drafting zones - the Spinlab 900 HVI System requires only two operators to
measure in a matter of seconds seven important properties of textile fibers. The System
can test up to 180 samples per hour. The test procedure begins at the right with trash, color
and mike testing and continues to the left with length and strength testing.
The textile industry already recognizes the value of test data to regulate raw fibre
purchases, bale selection for laydowns and inventory upkeep. Until now, however, the
issue has been the accuracy, efficiency and practicality of test instruments. To allay these
doubts Spinlab, the leading manufacturer of laboratory fiber test instruments, has designed
the 900 High Volume Fiber Test System to offer precise and reliable test mechanisms,
automated operation procedures, graphic capabilities, flexibility in measurement units and
test parameters, computer-controlled calibration and diagnostics, and user-friendly
software programs.
Because the design of these high volume instruments ( HVI ) meets government
standards, the United States Department of Agriculture ( USDA ) in 1984 installed thirty
900 Systems in four locations where the instruments were used to classify approximately
4.6 million bales of cotton. The system’s performance was again confirmed in 1985 by the
USDA’s decision to use the 900 System exclusively in three additional testing locations.
Cited reasons for the system’s use include its increased speed in testing large numbers of
bales, reduced variation in classification and a reduction in the number of highly trained
operators needed to classify bales. Spinlab’s 900 System is also in complete accord with
the American Society for Testing and Materials’ ( ASTM ) standard test method,
“Measurement of Cotton Fibers by High Volume Test Instruments”, published in 1986.
The 900 System can produce comprehensive profiles of as many as 180 bales per
hour that contain specific measurements for all seven of the parameters listed by the
USDA in its proposed cotton marketing program. For natural fibers the system measures
fiber length ( in span or mean length ), length uniformity, strength, elongation, micronaire,
color and trash. When calibrated to test man- made fibers, the Fibrograph repositions its
motors in order to adjust the testing mechanisms specifically for man-made fiber testing
and checks fiber length, length uniformity, strength, modulus, work peak, work total,
crimp and elongation. The entire system requires only two operators and they perform all
necessary tasks - from ID entry to sample disposal - in a streamlined testing sequence.
