Strength and Elongation
A strength measurement indicated on either Pressly or Stelometer level on a 1/8-
inch gauge basis is obtained by measuring the force required to break a sample of known
mass. Total elongation or the length to which the sample can be extended before breaking,
is also calculated.
Displays
The displays feature large-size letters, numbers and flags that make reading results
and checking test status simple. Operators are informed of the measurements as they are
taken and are reminded which tests need to be run by flags appearing in the status line.
Purchasing
Sixty to eighty percent of finished product cost goes to purchase raw fiber. Since
raw fiber is the most expensive factor in producing yarn, it demands a reliable quality
control system. 900 System test results aid the mill manager, the cotton merchant and the
man-made fiber producer in verifying that purchased fiber meets specifications.
Mix Selection
Choosing bales for a mix from an informed perspective helps prevent costly
disruptions in the mill, maintain mill production schedules and produce the highest quality
of yarn for the lowest raw fiber cost. If the exact characteristics of the raw fiber are known,
a consistent and homogeneous blend may be fed into spinning machinery.
Mike
A fineness or micronaire, measurement for cotton fiber is produced by passing a
metered air stream through a known mass of fiber in a chanber of known volume and
measuring the pressure differential.
Leaf
A high-resolution video camera in conjunction with a microprocessor produces leaf
or trash, test results, which consist of trash count or the number of individual trash
particles in a sample; the percent of the sample area occupied by trash and a trash code
number whose calibrated range includes the tested sample.
Color
During the color test, photodiodes absorb filtered light from an illuminated sample
and a microprocessor expresses results in three values. Lightness is expressed as percent
reflectance (% Rd), yellowness is in Hunter’s scale (+b) and the third result combines both
