Questions to the text
1. What does the Fibrograph measure?
2. How do spinners use the information taken by measuring the actual fiber segment
length?
3. What is the ultimate result of fine adjustment of draw frame, card and comber
machinery settings?
4. What types of fiber can be tested by the 900 System?
5. Why may natural fiber, man-made fiber and blends be tested successfully?
6. How can length and length uniformity be determined?
7. How is a strength and elongation measurement obtained?
8. What factors are important in purchasing raw fiber and in choosing bales for a mix?
9. What can you say about mike, leaf and color tests?
The 900 System:
Efficient in Operation
System testing begins at the right console with color, trash and fineness testing and
then continues to the left console with length and strength testing. The test procedure can
be efficiently run by two operators, one at each console. They can work continuously
without waiting on each other. With a smooth sample-handling system, a test cycle may be
completed every twenty seconds, a speed which enables thousands of tests per day.
Start
Initially, the right console test display shows only the alphabetical abbreviations
which identify the test results to be obtained. READY in the error line tells the operator
that the system is waiting for ID entry.
First, the operator enters the sample ID number via the keypad. ID number may also
be entered with a keyboard or an optical bar-code reader.
The operator begins the simultaneous color and trash tests by placing the sample on
the test window and making sure that the window is completely covered. The test
mechanisms are activated by pushing the button to the right of the window. During the
trash test, a dedicated monitor displays a digital picture of the sample. The sample is
lightness and yellowness in the equivalent three-digit USDA American Upland or single-
digit Pima color grade.
