school. By the middle of the second year, students must choose a specific
course of study and this is their ‘major’ for the degree. After the first degree,
students can attend Graduate School for specialized studies. The length of the
courses and the qualification vary depending on the subject.
  As in Britain, the highest degree is a Ph.D. which can be awarded after the
student has successfully completed a piece of independent research and produced a
