The computer-generates all that is seen by the user. Another
approach, called augmented reality, enhances the real world by
computer-generated overlays. For instance, a worker might ask the
computer to display the correct electrical connection while he is
looking at the actual aircraft wiring with see-through goggles. And
some “virtual presence” work goes beyond videoconferencing to
sense and manipulate objects from afar. Such applications include
monitoring a robot on Mars or diagnosing casualties near
hazardous front line.
In the mid-1980s, researchers at the National Aeronautics
and Space Administration (NASA) Ames Research Centre had to
use stick graphics to get 20-30 frames per second in architectural
modelling. Now much richer scenes are available and it gets better
every year. A small VR industry has sprung up, offering a variety
of mainly first-generation methods of creating synthetic
environments.
7. Network computers
The network computer, first promoted in late 1995 by Larry
Ellison of Oracle Systems Corp., Redwood Shores, Calif., hit the
headlines in 1996. Such computers dedicated to accessing the
Internet and Intranets will cost less than a PC because they will not
have mass storage devices and will use Web browsers instead of
Windows or Macintosh operating software. The units will probable
have much lower support costs than a PC because they can be
managed remotely and centrally.
Oracle, IBM, Sun Microsystems, Netscape Communications
Corp., Apple, and many other companies agreed on the network
computer standard last June. In the next few moths, numerous
models are expected to become available, and by yearend, it will be
clear whether they have succeeded instantly or will require further
work and more infrastructures.
In all likelihood network computers will have some degree of
success, but the will certainly not become PC-killers. They need
Internet bandwidth and today only large corporations have it.
Initially, they will be most attractive to corporations for Intranet
