Pennsylvania, called for night eating syndrome to be classed as a
serious illness alongside bulimia and anorexia. Sufferers are
usually stressed and poor sleepers, waking on average 3.5 times a
night. When they wake they snack on food high in carbohydrates,
so-called comfort foods.
In paper to be published in the summer, Dr Stunkard said
night snackers consumed 500 calories more than those with more
regular eating habits and were often obese. Dr Stunkard estimated
than 10 per sent of obese people suffered from night eating
syndrome. Nighttime snacking is also caused by mood and sleeping
disorders. The urge to eat increases during the night as night eaters
become more anxious and depressed. By eating, sufferers boost
levels of serotonin, a pleasure-enhancing chemical that occurs in
the brain.
Dr Stunkard said: “They are eating to medicate themselves
because the eating is very high in carbohydrates, which are likely
to increase the serotonin in the brain, and that stimulates sleep.”
Tests had shown that people with the condition experienced a
decrease during the night in levels of two hormones linked to sleep
and appetite – melatonin and leptin.
5. 15 die in high school massacre
Twelve students and a teacher were killed last week after two
young men dressed in trench coats and sky masks walked into a
Denver high school and opened fire, giggling as they scattered
pupils and staff. The two youngsters, both students at the school,
committed suicide.
The two suspects where found dead inside the library of
Columbine high school in the suburb of Littleton, their bodies next
to devices believed to have been bombs.
The attack left the United States, already accustomed to
classroom shootings,stunned by the scale of the bloodshed. The
tragedy will inevitable reopen the debate about gun control, pitting
the mounting indignation of parents and urban dwellers against the
multi-billion dollar gun industry and the country’s most powerful
lobbing group, the National Rifle Association.
Evidence a later emerged that the massacre appears to have
