Ex. 1.Practice the reading of the following words and word combinations:
the Thames, Waterloo, commemorate, Academician, contemporary, overcrowded,
though, unique, the Severn, survive;
over the last decade, the earliest bridge, the outstanding scientist, bridge design,
the contemporary assessment, many-storied houses, two unique viaducts, cast-iron bridge,
our contemporary engineers.
Ex. 2. These are the key words to lesson 7. You are to copy them and
memorize their meanings.

Translate the following sentences from English into Russian.
1. These chemicals may contaminate the water supply and cause cancer. 2. Gov-
ernment officials fear that if they put up taxes they will lose the election. 3. The rescue
group dug slowly and carefully, fearing that the wreckage might collapse on top of them.
4. She feared for the little boy when she saw him at the top of the tree. 5.This outstanding
scientist contributed greatly to the development of the safety system. 6. Don’t complain
without good cause. 7. You look as if you’ve seen a ghost. 8. The plane crashed and
caught fire, only 12 of the 140 passengers survived. 8. It looks as if it’s going to rain.
9. Not many of the insects survive the winter. 10. Only a few of Leonardo’s earlier paint-
ings still survive. 11. Our friendship has survived the bad times and has grown stronger.
12. I feel as if I’m getting cold.
