RIDGES OF GREAT BRITAIN
(1) There are 26 bridges spanning the Thames. The most famous among them are:
Tower Bridge erected in 1884, Waterloo Bridge commemorating the Duke of Wellington’s
victory over Napoleon, Westminster Bridge opened in 1750 despite protests by water men
fearing competition for their ferries. Many bridges have been renovated over the last
decade.
(2) Old London Bridge is the earliest bridge in Great Britain. Its construction began
in 1186 and lasted for 33 years. The outstanding scientist in the field of bridge building
Academician G. Perederey who contributed greatly to bridge design in Russia, gave the
contemporary assessment of Old London Bridge: “Twenty rather formless piers of differ-
ent thickness were built at different intervals from one another. The spans were not long
and some of them were bridged by arches, the others – by beams. The bridge looked as if
it were a dam on the river and caused essential drop in water level which was of great dan-
ger for boats. Chapels, shops and many-storied houses were densely built on the bridge. It
was always overcrowded”.
