Ex. 1. Practice the reading of the following words and word combinations:
tzar, prohibit, islet, tributary, masterpiece, Admiralty, sculpture;
in spite of the fact, the Department for Bridges and Roads, a flourishing bridge age,
high artistic value, arch granite spans.
Ex. 2. These are the key words to lesson 8. You are to copy them and
memorize their meanings.

Ex. 3. Translate the following words into Russian using the dictionary defini-
tions:
temporary – lasting only for a limited time;
a barge – a large, low boat with a flat bottom used mainly for carrying heavy goods
on a canal or river;
an anchor – a piece of heavy metal, usually a hook with two arms, at the end of
a chain or rope, for lowering into the water to keep a ship from
moving;
timber – wood for building;
to prohibit – to prevent, to make impossible;
an islet – a small island;
a tributary – a river that flows into a larger river;
an inhabitant – a person that lives in a particular place regularly or for a period
of time;
to admire – to look at with pleasure;
to tame – to train a wild animal to be gentle and unafraid in man’s presence.
Ex. 4. Translate the following sentences into Russian. Be careful: the verb
‘to make’ can have different meanings. Look them up in a dictionary.
1. By using assembly lines it became possible to make a car in an hour. 2. I think
that Barbie will make an excellent doctor. 3. Eating chocolate all afternoon made him feel
sick. 4. Alan made a bow and the curtain came down at the end of the play. 5. Patrick’s
mother makes him wear the velvet suit with the lace tie whenever they go visiting.
6. I think that as a director of the company, Jack makes about $25,000 a year. 7. I don’t see
how we can make Edinburgh if you drive so slowly all the time. 8. Ernie’s father was
made head of the town committee on preservation of trees. 9. The children are making a
lot of noise. I0. The king married the girl and made her his queen. 11. The pain made him
cry out. 12. This photo makes her look younger. 13. The story makes good reading.
14. Experience had made him a man. 15. She was made to wait for over an hour.
