Ex. 1. Practice the reading of the following words and word combinations:
manufacturers, existing, specifications, regular, company, appearance, incorporating,
state-of-the-art, microprocessor-controlled;
Brisbane Airport, Interurban Multiple units, Airtrain Citylink.
Ex. 2. These are the key words to lesson 8. You are to copy them and
memorize their meanings.
Word-box:
a railcar - моторвагон;
braking system – система торможения;
braking performance – торможение, тормозные характеристики;
wheel base – размер колеса;
a rack – полка;
an upholstered seat – мягкое сидение;
an entrance vestibule –тамбур;
to couple - соединять, сцеплять,
a coupler - сцепка;
service speed – эксплуатационная скорость;
acceleration - ускорение;
axleload - нагрузка на ось.
Ex. 3. Copy the following words and memorize their meanings:
to be similar (to) – быть похожим на …;
appearance - внешний вид;
state-of-the-art – передовой, современный;
to be adjacent to … – находиться рядом с …, по соседству с … .
Ex. 4. Translate the sentences from English into Russian.
1. The movie was made with state-of-the-art camera equipment. 2. Advertising uses
graphic design and state-of-the-art technology. 3. The two mushrooms have similar
appearance, so you need to be very careful. 4. They are very alike in appearance, but quite
different in character. 5. Can’t you do something about your appearance? You look rather
strange! 6. Sometimes it seems that appearance is the only thing that counts in job-hunting.
7. Fields adjacent to the nuclear plant have higher than usual levels of radioactivity. 8.
Areas adjacent to the railway will be electrified by the end of the year.
Ex. 5 The word ‘capacity’ is widely used in texts on railway transport;
nevertheless its meanings can be different depending on the subject discussed.
