Is the pollution indictment all wet?

THE ACCUSING FINGER of the environmentalist

movement is pointed squarely at recreational boats,

branding them as a major source of water pollution.

Several state legislatures have reversed their laissez-faire

attitude toward these craft and are now restricting their

operation. Similarly, communities seeking quieter

waterways are restricting the noise output of marine

engines.

The uproar is probably due in part to the boatmen

themselves who are notorious litterers. They scatter plastic containers, beer cans, and

other debris that washes up on beaches and accumulates beneath piers. Another reason

may be the rainbow-like trail of oil left behind older outboards. In the minds of some

environmentalists, this is associated with the massive damaging oil slicks caused by

wrecks of supertankers.

Whatever the reason, effluents from marine engines and onboard sewage systems

are being singled out as major cause of fish kills and dying vegetation.
