There are many reasons why management practices vary. In the first place, the
practice of management is shaped by the cultural values of the manager. For example,
remarkable differences exist between American styles of management and those
adopted by European, Japanese or Middle-Eastern managers. Also, the same principles
can rarely be implemented in different organizations in the same way; they must be
tailored to fit the goals, people, and circumstances of the particular situations involved.
Further differences in management practice will appear due to the personality and style
of the manager.
The specifics of a manager’s job depend partly on what management level he is on.
A second determinant of what a manager does is his functional responsibility. For
example, the specific activities that must be dealt with by an engineering manager are
quite different from those that would have to be handled by a production or sales
manager. Finally, what a manager does depends on whether he is serving in a line or
staff capacity.
Meetings serve many useful purposes, such as working out solutions to practical
problems, formulating policies or decisions concerning future courses of action, and
obtaining group acceptance of a decision or plan. In addition, there is a mutual sharing
of information and an opportunity to clarify, stimulate, and sharpen the thinking of
participants.
An advance agenda enhances understanding, generates ideas, and brings the group
together primed with the best information they can muster. Furthermore, group
members who come to meetings prepared are better motivated and derive greater
satisfaction from the meeting.
All decisions should be reached by a consensus of group members. The discussion
leader should have no pre-established decisions concerning the problems scheduled.
Otherwise, a meeting would not be necessary.
