CONCLUSION AND ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
Truly says the proverb old with the meaning vast: ''You won't be able to
know the Future if you don't know the Past". This humble Handbook of Old
English is intended to help students of the Linguistics Department as well as
postgraduates, studying History of English, understand how the so called
''Ugly Duckling'' (Old English) turned into "The Beautiful Swan" (Modern
English).
The Booklet is based on thе information received at lectures and
seminars on History of English, arranged by professors of Leningrad
University Dr. I. P. Ivanova and Dr. T. M. Belyaeva, my great supervisor
(1972-75) and owing to my best friends text-books on History of English
and the Anglo-Saxon Dictionary by Joseph Bosworth-Toller, sent by my
best friends Dr. John G.F. & Ruth Hind from Leeds & Moortown.
I can’t help recording my gratitude to our Beautiful Queen , our dear
Tutor M.A. Kashcheeva, Phd, who taught us the peculiarities of Modern
English after her coming back from England. It was a great British English
Epoch of 19621964, and we were also taught by different Englishmen,
good teachers from different parts of Great Britain: David Buckley from
Oxford, John Hind from Cambridge & later on Dr. Denis A.Ward, a great
teacher of Phonetics from Edinburgh, a bright young teacher & a great
chess-player John Smuts from Brighton who taught our students in 1993,
a talented & considerate Helen Warhurst from Nottingham, and of course
I am thankful to cute & bright Claire Macrory from Oxford for her talks
& help in our mutual teaching the cadets of the Civil Aviation College in
1998. Thanks a lot to great Arthur & Margaret Knowles, too (Bristol)!
I can easily compare it with our Happy Epoch of 1954-59, when we
were taught by Sophie Fuss & I.A.Krasnyanskaya, PhD at the faculty of
Foreign Languages of the Pedagogical University in our unforgettable city
of Krasnodar, where my wonderful friends lived & live now: our great
head-girl V.I. Bagrova, O.Cherepeikina, L.F.& L.G. Dudchenko, T.Fink,
and my most devoted friends G.M.Zakharenko & G.M.Shostak.
