When an in-line, 4-cylinder engine is
running, one pair of pistons is on the
upward stroke while the other pair is
travelling downwards. The two piston pairs

Due to the geometry of the crank
mechanism, the two pairs of pistons travel
at somewhat different speeds as they
approach their reversal positions. To
compensate for the resulting forces, the 2.3
litre engine is equipped with counter
rotating balancing shafts.
The balancing shafts are driven by a
chain and rotate at twice the crankshaft
speed. Weights that are eccentrically
mounted on the balancing shafts counteract
and smooth out the vibrations caused by the
