                                   THE GERUND

      1. Формальные признаки:
         – окончание -ing;
         – возможное наличие предлога.
      2. Может выполнять в предложении функции подлежащего, части
         сказуемого, дополнения, определения, обстоятельства.
      3. Переводится:
          – инфинитивом;
          – отглагольным существительным;
          – деепричастием.

      III. Найдите в следующих предложениях герундий по его
           признакам, определите его функцию. Дайте возможные
           варианты перевода предложений.
1. Reading technical literature is important for every engineer.
2. After graduating from the University he worked in the Far North.
3. At the conference they discussed different ways of solving the problem.
4. There are all the facilities for working in our library.
5. The task of the scientist was investigating the mechanism of the chemical
    reaction.
6. You can easily understand the text without translating it.
7. They began making the experiment in May.
8. By doing so he helped me greatly.
9. Learning rules without examples is useless.
10. There are many ways of translating Gerund into Russian.

      IV. Образуйте герундий от следующих глаголов и переведите:
to study, to get, to define, to use, to invent, to measure, to create, to work out, to
formulate, to experiment.

      V. Раскройте скобки, употребив герундий. Предложения
         переведите.
1. V.V.Petrov was the follower of Lomonosov in (изучение) electricity in our
    country.
2. He was the first to discover the possibility of (получение) metals out of ores
    by means of electricity.
3. In 1869 Mendeleyev proposed (использование) a new system of
    (классификация) elements.
