THE BERTONE FILO – THE CAR OF THE FUTURE
Part 2
We are already familiar with electronic accelerators; many of today’s cars
have throttle by wire, such as the Opel Zafira, the European compact minivan on
which the Filo is based. There are an increasing number of robotized manual
gearboxes – the Ferrari 360’s F1 gearshift being the current state-of-the-art
example – but those all depend on hydraulic actuation. SKF predicts that a “dry”
robotic clutch and gearshift like the Filo’s will be available by 2003.
The Filo’s brake by wire, developed by SKF in conjunction with Brembo,
might be in production in 2005. Mercedes-Bens will introduce an electro-
hydraulic brake system – halfway to fully electric brake by wire – called SBC,
on its new SL next spring. General Motors’ curiosity, the EV1, was the first
“production car” to use fully electric brakes on the rear wheels.
The steer-by-wire system could be ready by 2007, but no one is sure if and
when car steering will move into the computer age. The Filo demonstrates how
space can be liberated by dispensing with the conventional steering wheel.
SKF considered using a joystick, like the controls of the most modern
airliners, but was discouraged by the experiments of Mercedes, Saab, and others.
The Mercedes F200 show car from 1996 was another future-technology
demonstrator. It predicted several items that have since appeared on Mercedes
production models, including active body control, side-curtain airbags, and
keyless entry and starting. But its most controversial feature was its joystick
controls, one on each door and another on the center console. Either front-seat
occupant could drive the car, pushing one of the sticks left or right to steer,
forward to accelerate, back to brake.
Mercedes conducted extensive tests with this system, mostly in the safety
of its driving simulator. It concluded that accurate vehicle control could be
achieved eventually. However, the heavy-duty reeducation involved for most
drivers make the joystick control impractical. Producing a fleet of cyborgs able
to operate these vehicles was deemed too expensive by the German military.
