Production as a social process
To convert raw natural resources into usable goods and to get them where
they are wanted is a complicated process. Even in the simplest case, it involves
the coordinated efforts of hundreds of different people.
The network of institutions that controls production and consumption by the
members of a society is called an economic system, or an economy.
There are three sets of social institutions. People organized into families and
households are located in the first set. The second set comprises farms, mines,
factories and other producing units organized as business firms. The third set is
represented by government. Households supply business firms with the labor of
their members and the services of the land and other properties they own. The
business firms hire these productive services and organize them to supply prod-
ucts desired by the households.
Accompanying each movement of goods or productive services there is an
equal and opposite flow of money. Households receive income in the form of
wages, salaries, rent and profit for the services contributed by their members and
the property they own. This money income, in turn, permits them to buy the
things they need.
Governments constitute the third important element in the economy. Like
business firms, governments pay incomes to hire labor and other productive ser-
vices from households and deliver final products to households and to the busi-
ness community. Unlike products produced by business firms, however, few gov-
