AUTOMATION AS IT IS
The term "automation" was coined in the automobile industry about 1946. It
means the application of machines to tasks once performed by human beings.
Although the term "mechanization" is often used to refer to the simple replacement
of human labour by machines, automation generally implies the integration of
machines into a self-governing system.
True automation, as distinct from mechanization, started with the
development of feedback system. It is the presence of these systems that serves to
distinguish between automaton and mechanization. Feedback refers to the ability of
a machine to regulate itself. Trough a feedback a machine monitors its own output
and adjusts its performance in accordance with a set of standards stored along with
instructions, in computer memory. The system is capable of operating without
human intervention.
