     The development of automation technology has become increasingly
dependent on the use of computers and computer-related technologies.
      The development of the electronic digital computer in 1946 has permitted the
control function in automation to become much more sophisticated and the
associated calculations to be executed much faster than previously possible.
       Artificial intelligence is an advanced field of computer science, the computer
being programmed to exhibit the characteristics associated with human intelligence.
They include the capacity for learning, understanding language, reasoning, solving
problems, rendering expert diagnoses1, and similar mental capabilities.
Developments in artificial intelligence are expected to provide robots with the
ability to communicate with humans and to accept very high-level instructions.
       Having developed from automation, a number of other technologies achieved
a recognition and a status of their own. Robotics is one of them. It is a specialised
branch of automation in which the automated machine possesses certain human-
like characteristics, its powered mechanical arm being the most typical. It can be
programmed to move through a sequence of motions to perform useful tasks –
loading and unloading parts, making a sequence of spot welds, etc.
      So industrial robots are typically used to replace human workers in factory
operations.
      All these developments have contributed to the progress in automation
technology.
