AUTOMATION IN USE
For many people the word "automation" is mostly associated with
manufacturing.
A Flexible Manufacturing System (FMS) is the current level of automation in
the field of manufacturing. The application of FMS requires advanced technical
know-how. FMS is a form of flexible automation in which several machine tools
are linked together by a material handling

system, all aspects of the system being
controlled by a central computer. An FMS is distinguished from an automated
production line by its ability to process more than one product style simultaneously.
One of the most significant developments in automation is computer-aided
design

/computer-sided manufacturing

(CAD/CAM). This technology makes use
of computer systems to assist in the creation and optimisation of a design as well as
to control and monitor the processes that are involved in manufacturing a product
from that design.
The increased use of automation in factories has led to greater productivity in
many sectors of industry. Equally important, it has contributed to worker safety.
Complex tasks in situations hazardous for human beings, such as handling
radioactive materials or toxic chemicals, can be accomplished by automated
machinery at no risk of harm. Having replaced many unskilled jobs with skilled or
semi-skilled ones, automation has introduced large changes in the nature and kinds
of jobs offered by society.
In addition to manufacturing applications of automation, there are significant
achievements in other areas.
Applications in communications systems include local area networks,
