2. Learn the poem «How doth the little crocodile…» by heart.
3. Give the character sketch of Alice. Prove it using facts from
Chapters I and II.
4. Which of the following words can be considered as cultural
ones? Why?
The Multiplication-table, Rome, two feet high, a Dodo, the Eng-
lish coast, bathing machines, a hundred pounds, lodging houses, a wal-
rus, William the Conqueror, terrier.
5. Read the comments by Marc Edmund Jones for Chapter II
and say what you think about it.
– The second great principle of wisdom in the Philosophy of
Concepts as revealed through the adventures of Alice is that con-
sciousness is a tangible substance.
– Long before Lewis Carroll wrote this chapter it was well rec-
ognized that man is forced to swim through his own tears in life or that
he creates the substance of his own sensation.
– The symbolism of Alice in Wonderland is brought out exqui-
sitely in the falling of the animals into the pool of tears. Animals are in
fact the specialized and outer general traits or characteristics of man.
Can you name the traits represented by the creatures?
– The law of applied psychology or the second big idea for the
solution of personal problems is brought out here in the technique of
accuracy. The parody of Rev. Isaac Watt's «How Doth the Little Busy
Bee» is the first of the book's nonsense verses, and the merit of the
crocodile conceit lies in the general familiarity of the stanzas thus
twisted. Fun and nonsense bring out the essence because humor is
consciousness-stimulating perversion of seriousness, and the ability to
take outer things lightly with real humor as opposed to the respect-
killing counterfeit is the most outstanding mark of genuine mastership.
Why do you think L. Carroll chose this poem for his parody?

Against Idleness and Mischief.
(from Divine Songs Attempted in Easy Language
for the Use of Children, by I. Watts, 1715)
How doth the little busy bee
Improve each shining hour,
And gather honey all the day
From every opening flower!
How skillfully she builds her cell!
How neat she spreads the wax!
And labours hard to store it well
With the sweet food she makes.
In works of labour or of skill,
I would be busy too;
For Satan finds some mischief still
For idle hands to do.
In books, or work, or healthful play,
Let my first years be passed,
That I may give for every day
Some good account at last.
Chapter III. A CAUCUS-RACE AND A LONG TALE
1. Who are the characters of this chapter? How did L. Carroll
depict them? Read a short text to get some extra information about
them.
Все нравилось им в этой новой сказке, но, пожалуй, больше
всего – то, что в сказке говорилось о них. Героиней была средняя
