"How do you like your steak?" Roy Ranger asked.
"Medium," Carly replied smiling at the
cap on the old
head.
Three days had passed since Copter and Ben were rescued. Wilbur Sims was under
lock and key in a psychiatric ward at the VA hospital. He and Ned were talking
again. Perhaps they would be friends some day.
Randy was living with the Chutes, and Ben seemed genuinely happy to have an
older cousin around.
parents were back from their vacation, and he would be
leaving with them for Florida in another day. They had learned all that had happened
to him, but as near as they could tell the only thing that made any impression was the
helicopter ride.
Ruth was much better, and she, too, knew what had happened. In one way Wilbur
Sims was lucky. No one wanted to press any charges against him. Everybody seemed
to feel sorry for him including Avery Martin, though he wouldn't admit it.
Carly looked around. Three days earlier she would never have imagined she would
be the guest of honor at a cowboy barbecue hosted by Roy Ranger.
Spotting Sandy and Patch standing off to the side and talking Carly realized how
much she was going to miss them. Well, she thought, by the time Sandy gets home, I
should have something for him to do with Carly and company, and Patch will be
along soon after that.
thoughts were interrupted by the sound of laughter - flirtatious laughter.
She turned and saw Bella standing behind the grill and hanging on to Roy Ranger's
arm. She smiled to herself. Maybe, just maybe, Bella wasn't going to want to leave
for Tucson in the morning."
