VERB PATTERNS
Verb
-ing form or verb
to
infinitive.
According to English Grammar, when they want to use two verbs together they
often use -ing form of the second verb:
She adores baking brownies.
He imagined failing the exam.
Some verbs are always followed by the -ing form. These are verbs such as: admit,
adore, avoid, consider, deny, dislike, enjoy, finish, imagine, involve, miss, risk,
suggest and phrasal verbs like carry on, give up, keep on, put off.
After certain verbs they always use to
infinitive:
Melinda decided to expand her business.
They promised to come to the station to see Ben off.
Verbs of this type are: agree, appear, arrange, attempt, dare, decide, expect, fail,
forget, hope, learn, manage, offer, plan, pretend, promise, refuse, seem, tend,
threaten, want.
Some verbs can be followed either the -ing form or to
infinitive without any
change to the meaning. These are verbs such as:
hate, begin, start, continue,
intend, not bother.
My uncle loves to go for short walks in the country.
My uncle loves going for
short walks in the country.
