Liza began working hard on her
Spanish.
Other verbs can be followed by either the -ing form or to
infinitive but the
meaning is different. Compare the different meanings with these verbs:
Harry remembered meeting Sally. (Harry remembered that he had
met Sally.)
Harry remembered to meet Sally. (He had arranged to meet her.)
Stop: They decided they should stop eating at a cafe. (They decided they
shouldn't eat at a cafe any more.)
They decided they should stop to eat at a cafe. (They decided they should stop
walking and eat at a cafe.)
Try: I tried to open the door but it was locked. (I couldn't open it.)
I tried opening the door to put an end to screeching.
It worked, the
screeching stopped.)
According to Grammar, both -ing form and to
infinitive can be used after the
verb like, but the meaning can be slightly different: like
-ing form means enjoy,
whereas like
infinitive means that there are options.
I like pottering around on Sunday.
I like to wear bright clothes in the summer.
After would like only to
infinitive is used.
I would like to speak to the Personnel manager.
The son would like to eat another ice-cream.
Verb

Sometimes the following verbs can be used with that
clause: admit, agree, decide,
deny, expect, forget, promise, remember, suggest.
They agreed to leave.
They agreed that they should leave.
Jane promised to phone the next day.
Jane promised that she would phone the
next day.
Somebody suggested calling the hospital.
Somebody suggested that they
should call the hospital.
RELATIVE CLAUSES
Some sentences have just one clause: She shouted at her son.
But some have two or more clauses:
MAIN CLAUSE SECOND CLAUSE
She shouted at her son who unfortunately had broken her favorite cup.
The second clause is a relative clause. Such sentences give more information about
the person or thing in the main clause.
