Harvard University
Harvard University is the oldest institution of higher learning in the United States
and one of the nations most prestigious. Its history began when a college was
established at New Towne in 1636. Some 130 alumni of the universities of Oxford
and Cambridge emigrated to New England. At that time Puritans were not allowed
to English Universities, they decided to set up a college of their own in the New
World. Classes began with one master and nine students in a single frame house
and a college yard. The college was named Harvard for a Puritan minister, John
Harvard. In the early 19
th
century, the schools of divinity, law, and medicine were
begun. The first president, Henry Dunster, set up high standards in the literal art.
