TEXT 2. Gross weight had been over-assessed and fuel fraction under assessed
by me experts. This was partly because the savings in empty weight achieved by ex-
tensive use composites, quadruple- Plax fly-by-wire flight control system, a wet
wing, low pressure in the cargo bay and the all-titanium cargo floor had been under-
estimated. The important feature of the design is an advanced wing section, with the
flat top and undercut trailing edge, which is characteristic of the latest Western de-
signs. Such a supercritical, or aft-loaded section makes it possible to design a wing of
greater span for a given weight, while providing more internal volume for fuel.
TEXT 3. Important weight reductions also result from the use of artificial sta-
bility, provided by a four-channel analogue fly-by-wire system. The result is that the
aircraft can be effectively controlled with a relatively small, low-set, fixed incidence
tail plane, further reducing structural weight, drag and system complexity. More
weight is saved by using 5,500 kg of composmaterial. The glass-fibre-reinforced
plastic and carbon-fibre composite airframe components с 1,800 kg lighter than metal
