My friend likes to answer the questions exactly.
– Where is the shop? – one man asked him.
– The shop? It’s necessary to reach the bridge, pass the bridge and then go to the right.
– And is the bridge long?
– It’s about 20 metres.
The man said: «Thank you», and went to the bridge. Suddenly he heard that someone was running to him.
– Stop! – my friend cried. – I remembered, that the length of the bridge was 40 metres. Stop that man! If he passes 20 metres
and turn to the right, as I have told him, he will fall to the river.

Late autumn has come. Winter is coming. I have never seen winter and snow. Now it is October and it is already cold out of
doors. It often rains. A cold wind is blowing. There are no leaves in the trees already. Days are cloudy.
I often remember my Motherland. Of course, it is warm at my place, it is almost always sunny. We can go for a walk for a long
time in the parks and in the streets of the town. But here when it is nasty we are in a hurry to get home. But I am sure I will get used to
any weather, because the main thing is that good friends and interesting work would be closed.

Yesterday it was November 13. It was Friday yesterday. Many people think that 13 is unhappy number. I didn’t think so before
yesterday.
Yesterday when I was shaving, I cut my finger. My wife broke a cup, when she was cooking dinner. My son got two twos – in
Mathematics and in Music. Our children broke neighbours’ window, when they were playing with a ball. In the evening we wanted to
watch TV, but it had broken. We went for a walk to the park. There we sat down to have a rest. When we stood up we could see that
the benches were painted. The dress and trousers became green.
So I knew that number 13 is really unhappy. But may be it is coincidence?

It happened in Leningrad in 1942. The Great Patriotic War has already been lasting for two years. Hunger was beginning in
Leningrad. People in Leningrad got only 200 grammes of bread a day.
One day an engineer got a parcel from Moscow. In the parcel the engineer saw different food products: sausage, butter, sugar
and chocolate. The engineer at once thought about his mother, who lived in another town, in the East. He knew that there was a prob-
lem with products there too. That is why he decided to send his mother a half of the products, which had been sent to him.
Two weeks later the engineer’s mother got the parcel. When she saw the products, she thought: «It is necessary to send to the
younger daughter!» Her younger daughter lived in evacuation in Western Siberia. At that time she was very ill. That is why the
mother sent her sick daughter all the products.
Soon the parcel arrived at the far Siberian village. When the daughter got the parcel from her mother, she also thought not
about herself, but about her brother. She knew that he was in Leningrad and there was hunger there. One soldier was to go to the
front to Leningrad. And she decided to send all to her elder brother to Leningrad. He agreed to take the parcel to pass it to the engi-
neer.
In several days the soldier was already in Leningrad. He came to the engineer and gave him the parcel. When the engineer
opened the parcel, he could see all the food products, which he had sent to his mother.

A well-known Russian doctor Sergei Petrovich Botkin accounted one of the exams at the Military-Medical Academy in St. Pe-
tersburgh. One student came to pass the exam for the third time. The young man could not answer the examiner’s questions, because
he attended neither lectures nor seminars. Botkin didn’t account the exam that time.
A little later excited friends of the lazy fellow came to the professor. They said the student was depressed by his failure and he is
going to commit a suicide, he threatened to thrust a knife into his heart.
Don’t worry – reassured Botkin. – Your friend doesn’t know a structure of a human body. He will not find his heart…

Today Helen is in high spirits: Jim is coming. She is going to meet him. The train is arriving at the beginning of four, that’s why
she has time to meet him after her classes at the University. Helen is a student of the Architectural faculty in the Technical University.
Classes begin at 9 o’clock in the morning.
There are two lectures today. The second lecture is over at 12.20. There is enough time, of course, to get to the railway station in
time.
And now it is morning. Helen is going to the University. Today she wants to look nice so that Jim would like her. She put on a
red blouse and a white skirt. Her shoes are white. Helen’s hair is dark. She knows that red colour suits her. Helen’s bag is red too.
She looks at a mirror and she likes herself. But it is necessary to hurry up not to be late to the University.
